Indian security forces shot and killed a key Maoist commander as well as nine militants, intensifying the pressure on the ongoing insurgency. This news indicates the government’s continued efforts to undermine the forces linked to the long-standing Naxalite movement.
According to the report, the military operation took place late at night in the forest areas between the states of Odisha and Chhattisgarh. Among the killed was Modem Balkrishna, who had long led the Maoist structure in Odisha and was known by various aliases.
A reward of $114,000 had been offered for his capture. This blow to the Naxalite leader is part of efforts to curb the uprising that originated around six decades ago in a village at the foothills of the Himalayas.
