China has condemned the actions of the United States and the United Kingdom in the Taiwan Strait.
A representative of the Eastern Theater Command of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) stated that the actions of the US destroyer USS Higgins and the British frigate HMS Richmond “are a violation of order and a provocation, sending the wrong signal and undermining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.”
In response, the UK Ministry of Defence emphasized that the passage of the ships was a routine operation. The department noted that “wherever the Royal Navy operates, it does so in full accordance with international law and norms, and exercises its rights to freedom of navigation under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.”
