A man suspected of spying for Russia has been detained in Latvia. The State Security Service (SSS) of the country reported the arrest in Riga of a person who, as alleged, collected and transmitted secret information about military facilities and NATO activities on the territory of Latvia to the Russian intelligence.
The detention took place on August 27, and a criminal case has now been initiated against the suspect on charges of illegally collecting and transmitting information to a foreign intelligence service.
According to the SSS, the interests of the alleged agent included extremely sensitive data. This refers to:
The location and plans of military facilities;
Security systems and the progress of construction of new strategic facilities;
Details of the training of military personnel;
Information about the presence of NATO contingents on Latvian soil.
The Latvian special services express serious concern, believing that the collected information could be used to undermine the security of both Latvia and other Baltic states.
