The opening of the cargo airport in Alat is planned for the first quarter of 2027.
As reported by the correspondent of Caliber.Az, this was announced by the President and CEO of Silk Way West Airlines, Wolfgang Meier.
“We started the construction of the airport in Alat at the end of 2023, which will be completed by the end of next year, and the opening will take place in the first quarter of 2027,” Meier said at the I Azerbaijani International Investment Forum (AIIF’25).
According to Meier, the airport will be located in the free economic zone and a whole ecosystem of cargo air transportation and logistics will be created in the free trade zone and free economic zone.
“And this will be a huge stimulus for the economy, for transport accessibility, for the development of the logistics sector in this country. This will be a ‘green’ airport. Solar panels will be installed on the roofs, and the service equipment will run on electricity. This will be the airport of the future, a green cargo airport with a four-kilometer runway,” he emphasized.
Meier noted that Silk Way will develop intermodal routes along the Middle Corridor.
“Baku is our strategic hub. This is the place where East and West meet, where we connect people from all over the world. The so-called Middle Corridor, as I call it, has always been the ‘stepchild’ among the transport routes from East to West. Recently, this ‘stepchild’ has gained momentum. And we, as Silk Way, will develop not only ‘air-air’ routes along this ancient Silk Road, but also intermodal routes: connecting land routes with air, and rail with air,” Meier said.
