Azerbaijan has taken on the role of a diplomatic mediator, facilitating negotiations between Australia and Turkey regarding the selection of the host country for the 31st session of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP31).

This new mission was reported by Yalchin Rafiyev, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, during his speech at an international conference within the framework of Baku Climate Action Week.

According to the diplomat, Azerbaijan’s active participation in the climate agenda became possible due to the enormous success of the COP29 held in Baku, which set new standards. He recalled that the conference was one of the largest in history, gathering over 76 thousand participants, and the second in terms of the number of heads of state and government present. Rafiyev particularly noted the high level of inclusivity of the event, which brought together representatives of governments, business, science, and civil society.

Speaking about the long-term legacy of the Baku summit, the deputy minister emphasized the importance of fulfilling financial commitments by developed countries. “We must be sure that the states expected to provide climate financing will fulfill their obligations,” he stated.

In this context, Azerbaijan is actively working with Brazilian partners to implement the Baku-Belem roadmap. The key goal of this plan is to form a new financial mechanism worth $1.3 trillion to support developing countries in their fight against the consequences of climate change.
