FT: Germany Is Ready to Play a Leading Role in EU Rearmament

Germany seeks to play a leading role in the rearmament program of EU armed forces, positioning itself as a leader of joint ventures in this area to respond to growing external threats.

This is reported by Financial Times, which has reviewed the corresponding draft political document from Berlin.

It was prepared ahead of the leaders’ meeting scheduled for October, at which Brussels intends to present a roadmap for strengthening the EU’s defense capabilities by 2030.

The German authorities propose creating “collective capacity coalitions” – groups of states that will jointly develop and purchase weapons systems in specific priority areas, such as air defense.

“Germany is ready to take a leading role,” the document emphasizes.

In Berlin, they also believe that the European Defense Agency should play a more active role as a “central platform for searching and coordinating European procurement” and, with the assistance of authorities, harmonize national armaments standards.

“Projects should be open to Ukraine and third countries that are eligible,” they state in Germany.
