Indonesia Prepares to Move the Capital

The Indonesian government plans to complete the process of relocating the capital from Jakarta to Nusantara by 2028.

According to Jakarta Globe, this was announced by the head of the presidential administration of the republic, Muhammad Chodari.

“If there is only the Presidential Palace without legislative and judicial institutions, how can the government function effectively? All three branches of power must be represented in Nusantara,” Chodari said.

He noted that the construction of all the necessary buildings for state institutions will be completed by 2028 in accordance with the instructions of the President of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto.

“This will allow the [new] capital to truly meet the standards of the center of state power,” added the head of the Indonesian leader’s administration.

Joko Widodo, who served as President of Indonesia from 2014 to 2024, proposed the idea of relocating the capital of Indonesia from Jakarta in 2019. It was initially planned that the megacity would appear on the island of Kalimantan by 2024. Almost $32 billion was allocated for these purposes, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the implementation of the project was suspended.

In mid-January 2022, the head of state announced that the new capital will be called Nusantara (which means “archipelago” in translation). On July 28, 2024, Joko Widodo went there to spend the first working days, but on July 30 he returned to Jakarta, where the government is currently located. Prabowo Subianto, after his election as President, stated that he is striving to complete the construction of Nusantara and is ready to move there.
