Moscow Will Discuss the Expediency of Participation in the ODIHR OSCE Against the Background of Criticism from the CEC

Russian President Vladimir Putin initiates a discussion with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Federal Assembly on the country’s further participation in the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (ODIHR OSCE). The discussion unfolded after harsh criticism from the head of the Central Election Commission (CEC).

During a recent meeting with the president, CEC Chairwoman Ella Pamfilova expressed doubt about the expediency of Russia’s further financial contributions to the ODIHR OSCE. In her opinion, the organization does not fulfill its direct functions of protecting electoral rights and journalists’ rights, which makes its membership meaningless.

As one of the striking examples, Pamfilova cited the situation with elections in Moldova, where Russian observers were not allowed to monitor the process.

Commenting on the CEC chairwoman’s report, Vladimir Putin stated: “We will definitely consult with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and deputies from both chambers. We’ll talk, we’ll think about this topic”. He also characterized the situation with observers being denied access to Moldovan elections as “absurd”.

Thus, Russia is considering revising its participation in a key OSCE institution, which could entail serious diplomatic consequences.
