It is believed that Iran has conducted an undeclared missile test at the Imam Khomeini Spaceport. Analysis of recent satellite images indicates active steps by Tehran in developing its weapons program, causing serious concern in the international community.
Although Iranian officials have not yet confirmed the test from last week (which apparently took place at the same site where major launches were previously conducted as part of the civilian space program), an Iranian parliamentarian, without providing specific evidence, claimed testing of a possible intercontinental ballistic missile.
This event and subsequent statements heighten concerns about Iran’s intentions to expand the range of its missiles. This occurs against a backdrop of growing tension, especially in anticipation of a possible restoration of United Nations sanctions on Tehran’s nuclear program, which is expected this weekend. Moreover, Iran is actively restoring missile facilities that were previously attacked.
As noted by analyst Behnam Ben Taleblu, specializing in Iranian policy, Israel’s successful counteraction to Iranian missile attacks during a recent conflict likely prompted Tehran to accelerate the development of new ballistic missiles and qualitatively improve existing models. He views the current activity as part of Tehran’s efforts to “rebuild better than before, and as quickly as possible”.
