Yerevan Takes a Step Towards Peace: The Armenian Parliament Approves Key Principles of a Peace Agreement with Azerbaijan

The National Assembly of Armenia at an extraordinary meeting made a decisive step towards normalizing relations with Azerbaijan. A declaration was adopted by a majority vote of the ruling faction, laying the foundation for establishing long-term peace between the two countries. The voting took place without the participation of opposition forces, who left the meeting hall.

The document is based on principles agreed upon by the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan with the mediation of the United States in Washington on August 8 of this year. The parliament officially expressed support for this joint declaration and welcomed the paraphing (preliminary signing) of the peace agreement.

A key provision of the document is mutual recognition and respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity, and inviolability of borders. It is emphasized that it is under these conditions that all transportation communications in the region will be unblocked. As stated in the declaration, this step is necessary to protect Armenia’s national interests and ensure peaceful coexistence.

The role of the United States is separately noted in the document. The deputies confirmed Armenia’s intention to work with the US on implementing the “Trump Path for International Peace and Prosperity” (TRIPP) project and expressed gratitude to US President Donald Trump for his efforts.

In the final part of the statement, the parliament appeals to the societies, political and expert circles of both countries to refrain from actions and rhetoric that could reignite the conflict.
