Azerbaijan has the potential to use natural gas freed up through the introduction of renewable energy sources (RES) for producing “green” hydrogen. This perspective was voiced by the chief banker in the RES field of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) Sandro Museridze.
Speaking today in Baku at the event “Green Energy Week 2025: Azerbaijan and Central Asia”, the EBRD representative recalled the bank’s assistance in developing a long-term low-carbon strategy for Azerbaijan. He emphasized that the bank is considering scenarios that ensure energy security, emissions reduction, and sustainable economic growth.
“Currently, over 80% of installed capacity in Azerbaijan is from oil and gas,” Museridze noted. According to him, even the commissioning of just two major RES projects would allow for the annual release of about 300,000 cubic meters of gas. “This gas, for example, can be used for hydrogen production,” he added.
The EBRD representative acknowledged the existence of both opportunities and challenges on this path, but expressed confidence in the market’s ability to adapt. He also emphasized the importance of regional cooperation and creating a unified energy system that would serve not only the internal needs of countries but also strengthen ties between them.
